Year 7 visit the BLL

At the moment in Gateacre, we are placing a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure.

There is strong evidence linking reading for pleasure and educational outcomes. We know that academic attainment is of vital importance but the benefits of reading for pleasure go beyond this and stretch throughout a person's life. Research finds that reading for pleasure can result in increased empathy, improved relationships with others, reductions in the symptoms of depression and dementia and improved wellbeing.

As part of the drive to promote reading, the whole of year 7 were taken to our BIG Little Library this week to choose books which they could keep and to complete a quiz, created by Harrison Crossley in Year 10, which enabled them to learn how to navigate around a library.

The students were an absolute credit to the school and it was a genuine delight to see so many of them engrossed in books. It has also been truly lovely to see a large number of our students reading the books they were given at the start of lessons without any prompting.- a sight to warm anyone's heart.

It was such a success that we are going to repeat the process with year 8 in a few weeks.

Callum was the lucky winner of a complete set of Alex Rider books worth £90 as a prize for his fantastic response to the quiz.
