Headteacher's Newsflash 15/09/2017

Open Evening Wednesday 27th September 2017

On Wednesday 27th September 5-8pm we are opening our doors to the parents of pupils in Years 6, 5 and 4 in order to share with them why we think our school is rapidly improving so that it becomes the first choice for parents in our local community and beyond.

This summer saw the school attain its best ever results for GCSE, A Level and Vocational exams and we would very much like to share the story of our success and invite you all along to be part of our continued journey towards becoming an Outstanding school.

Safeguarding – Ofsted Update – Blue Whale social media challenge

For regular readers of the Newsflash and those that keep up to date with us via MyEd app, Facebook and Twitter you may remember that we discussed ‘Blue Whale’ some months ago http://gateacre.org/about-us/2016-news/esafety-alerts/ .  Ofsted have issued this notice to all schools via their autumn update.

In the School Inspection Update July 2017, Ofsted wrote:

“We would like to draw attention to a potentially harmful social media challenge to young people called ‘the Blue Whale Challenge’. This international challenge, labelled as a game, is being heavily promoted on social media sites. The reference to ‘blue whale’ is the first part of this challenge, which encourages children and young people to self-harm by drawing, with a blade, a blue whale on themselves. The challenges continue over 50 days and become more serious and dangerous in nature. Internationally, there have been reports of several deaths that have been attributed to the challenge. The police are warning parents to be vigilant about this challenge.”

Year 11 GCSE and Year 13 A Level/Vocational 2018 Countdown

For Year 11 and Year 13 there are only 29 school weeks left, just 145 days in school, until your first exam!

Remember the route to educational success is a marathon and not a sprint. Your summer 2018 grades will depend on your hard work and commitment throughout the year and not last minute revision the week or night before an exam.

As ever, we will help and support you as much as we can. Our pre-public exams will commence in November and run into December giving you an indication of where you are at that moment in time.  After Christmas when you return in January 2018 the final stretch of your last few months in Year 11/13 await.

The importance of good school attendance – 97%

As a parent I want my child to have the best possible start and in order to give him that he has to go to school and attend every day.

We are often asked about the best ways in which parents can support their children and help ensure that they achieve their potential. Clearly, there are many ways in which parents can help. Parents should talk to their children about what they are doing at school and take an interest in their work. Parents should, whenever possible, encourage their child to read and develop their literacy skills.

We hope that parents will work with us and we expect their absolute support in following the school rules and code of conduct; students normally do well if there is a positive and constructive relationship between home and school. Most importantly, we hope that parents will simply ensure that their child has excellent attendance.

Every day a child is absent from school he or she misses five lessons and falls behind the other students in the group in five different subjects. It is no surprise that there is an absolute and direct link between attendance and achievement; children with good attendance do well and those with frequent absence don’t. Students who aren’t here can’t learn.

Please do not take students out of school for holidays during term time. A child who misses a week misses 25 lessons; a child who misses a fortnight misses 50 hours of education, time that will never be made up.

Please make routine medical and dental appointments for out of school hours. If an appointment can only be made for during the school day then students should come in beforehand and return afterwards.

Don’t let your child stay off for a whole day. Always send your child in unless they really are too ill to attend. Nine times out of ten, students who feel ‘off colour’ when they get up in the morning are absolutely fine when they get to school with their friends. If they are not, then we will look after them and send them home if necessary.

If parents really want to support their child and give them the best opportunities when they leave school then they must ensure that they attend every possible day that they can. Parents who allow their child to stay off for no good reason are letting them down and neglecting their future.

So far we are averaging 95% attendance across all years for the first two weeks of school.  The more days your child attends the better they will do.

Visit our website regularly for updates and check your child's attendance record via the My Student button on our MyED parent App regularly.

Parking

Parents are reminded not to park alongside Hedgefield Road on the double yellow lines as this is illegal and causes hazard to pedestrians and road users.  We ask that parents do not park in the parking bays nor enter the driveway to Gateacre School to drop off or collect pupils before or after school.
