Summer Concert

On a balmy summer’s night, an enthusiastic audience of family, friends and classmates gathered in the Gateacre theatre to enjoy a night of live music. The 2017 Gateacre Summer Concert featured performances from students in all year groups and a musically diverse programme took in everything from Mozart to Harry Styles via Ozzy Osbourne, Ed Sheeran and Leonard Bernstein!

The orchestra opened and closed proceedings while the Pop Voices vocal group opened the second half and there were several fine solo vocal performances from Georgia Johnson (“With You”), Will Murray (“Afire Love”), Lily-May Boardman (“Hold Back The River”), Megan Hollis (“If I Ain’t Got You”), Amy Figueira (“A Thousand Years”), Olivia Switzer (“Dancing On My Own”) and Jamie-Lei Dennett (“I’m Still Here”). Lauren White offered a powerful and accomplished reading of “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story and Sophie Roberts, backed by the house band, reprised her moving performance of Harry Styles’ “Sign Of The Times” from our recent year 11 leavers’ assembly.

Our year 10 band produced a storming and soulful version of “Valerie” whilst sixth-form combo, Crypt, conjured up a version of Ozzy Osbourne’s “I Don’t Know” brimming with power and virtuosity.

By way of contrast we enjoyed nuanced performances of pieces by Mozart, Bohm and Saint-Saëns from Catherine Croft (piano), Brooklyn Jorgenson (violin) and Catrina Kenward (viola) respectively, the latter two also contributing to the String Group’s spirited performance of two traditional Irish Jigs and Reels.

The concert was compered by year 9 student, Brian Comer, who delivered a string of jokes before taking the spotlight himself for a fine version of Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me”.

A hugely enjoyable evening concluded on an emotional note as we recognised the efforts and musical achievements of four of our year 13 music students for whom this was their final concert performance at the school. We wish Catherine, Brooklyn, Chris and Isobel well and we look forward to the next celebration of live music-making at Gateacre!
